MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Lisa Eady
Board President

Since the earliest times, Americans have joined together to help each other and to strengthen their communities.  Our deep-rooted spirit of caring, of neighbor helping neighbor, has become an American way of life. In the Concho Valley, the United Way has played an integral part in the lives of thousands of people since its inception in 1925. Those who need assistance receive help from programs provided by local agencies that are supported by the United Way.  In 2011 the United Way asked Concho Valley residents to “Be There” for those less fortunate in our community.  At the conclusion of the campaign on January 31, 2012, West Texans proved that they had taken the message to heart by raising a total of $2,038,624 for the United Way Community Campaign.

The United Way believes that Education, income and health are the building blocks for a good life.  Every program receiving funding support from the United Way of the Concho Valley must be able to show how it is able to improve lives by impacting one or more of these areas.

Education:
United Way provides funds to increase the number of children entering school ready to learn and succeed.  Children from low socio-economic homes have an opportunity to attend a high quality learning center and progress in the developmental skills necessary for success in kindergarten.  United Way of the Concho Valley knows it is necessary to increase the number of youth who are successful in learning.  We invest in quality after school programs that emphasize the importance of learning.  We also support a program which enables people to learn to speak English as a second language.

Income:
United Way of the Concho Valley funds programs that provide support and education for participants every step of the way on the road back to financial stability.  As an example, the NewBridge Family Shelter Program provides immediate assistance in the short term, but also provides resources and the tools to use for long-term stability.  The San Angelo Early Childhood Center’s Infant, Toddler and Pre-K Program provides quality day care so parents are able to work full-time and financially support their families.  Our strategy empowers people to get involved and change their lives.

Health:
Because we are here, babies born to teen parents are now born healthy and have case management to ensure they develop properly and stay healthy.  Adults are receiving treatment for drug and alcohol addictions. Seniors are provided with a safe haven that includes nursing and personal care in order to increase their quality of life.  A regional food bank provides food to 105 agencies throughout the Concho Valley to ensure nutritious food is available to all who need it.

As we move forward, United Way of the Concho Valley will continue to work to meet basic needs and create opportunities for everyone.  Your support makes a difference.
Thank you!
Lisa Eady

    HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Hope for the Holidays is a community based project designed to raise emergency funds during the Christmas season for our community's neediest individuals and families who fall through the cracks in the system.  The project is organized, sponsored and led as a philanthropic effort by the San Angelo Standard-Times, Foster Communications and the United Way of the Concho Valley.

In 2011, this program received $20,719.70

    These generous donations provided:
  • Clothing for children who desperately needed the assistance.
  • Transportation to help a serviceman return home for his father's funeral.
  • Electric Heaters for a grandmother raising her grandson.
  • A wheelchair and walker to an individual needing the adaptive equipment to maintain independence.
  • Medically prescribed hose for a lady at risk for serious blood clots.
  • Blankets and other comfort items for individuals living in a local nursing center.
