MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Becky Brackin
Board President
The 2012 Campaign theme was "One Love, One Heart, One Way - The United Way." It reflected the concept that each individual gift to the United Way of the Concho Valley supports seventeen local program providers that offer services throughout the Concho Valley. Every minute of every day contributions are at work providing shelter, food and hope to people in our community who are struggling to improve their lives from almost impossible situations. The need has never been greater. Here in the Concho Valley:
5,039 children and 2,057 senior citizens rely on food stamps
4,142 people exist below the national poverty level
3,557 grandparents are raising their grandchildren
18% of adults are functionally illiterate
292 youngsters are in foster care
825 children were confirmed victims of child abuse
380 babies were born to teen mothers
The United Way of the Concho Valley believes it can address these issues and more by focusing on health, education and income, which are the building blocks for a good life. Every program receiving funding support from the United Way of the Concho Valley must be able to demonstrate how it is able to improve lives by impacting one or more of these areas:
Education: United Way provides funds to increase the number of children entering school ready to learn and succeed. Children from low socio-economic homes have an opportunity to attend a high quality learning center and progress in the developmental skills necessary for success in kindergarten. United Way of the Concho Valley knows it is necessary to increase the number of youth who are successful in learning. We invest in quality after school programs that emphasize the importance of learning. We also support a program which enables adults to learn to speak English as a second language.
Income: United Way of the Concho Valley funds programs that provide support and education for participants every step of the way on the road back to financial stability. Our strategy empowers people to get involved and change their lives.
Health: Because we are here, babies born to teen parents are now born healthy and have case management to ensure they develop properly and stay healthy. Adults are receiving treatment for drug and alcohol addictions. Seniors are provided with a safe haven that includes nursing and personal care in order to increase their quality of life. A regional food bank provides food to 105 agencies throughout the Concho Valley to ensure nutritious food is available to all who need it.
As we move forward, the United Way of the Concho Valley will continue to work to meet basic needs and create opportunities for everyone.
Your support makes a difference.
Thank you!

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Hope for the Holidays is a community based project designed to raise emergency funds during the Christmas season for our community's neediest individuals and families who fall through the cracks in the system. The project is organized, sponsored and led as a philanthropic effort by the San Angelo Standard-Times, Foster Communications and the United Way of the Concho Valley.
In 2012, this program received $21,881
These generous donations provided:
- Hearing aids and glasses to people who were unable to afford them.
- Electric Heaters for over 100 seniors enrolled in Meals for the Elderly.
- Washing machines for two seniors living alone and trying to remain independent.
- Transportation to medical centers for the families desperately needing care.
- A refrigerator for a grandmother raising her grandchild.
- A first alert system for a grandfather living alone so he can call for assistance if needed.
FILE OF LIFE

Since 2007, the United Way of the Concho Valley has distributed thousands of File of Life throughout the community. This simple refrigerator magnet and personal wallet sized card is available at no charge to anyone in the fourteen county area of the Concho Valley. This card contains vital personal medical informtion and is available so emergency responders can instantly know the medical history of a patient. The card owner has increased peace of mind because they know they can receive prompt and quality care because of the information that is readily available. |
